As I look over the pond and hear the leaves crush under my feet. Nothing but silence and cold air fills my lungs. Not even the birds making a sound, for it is too late into the cold hibernation. I have been to this spot before but has I like back it never feels like this. Maybe it is because there are not people around me laughing and playing in the sand, but rather a state of tranquility. That must be a factor but the real reason in my mind is the reading of walden. Reading Thoreau's writing really enlightened me to the beauty of this place.
This is my second video in my tips series. If there is anything that you would like me to do a video on in the future then comment on this and I will do one next weekend. I want to continue to do videos and I would like to make it a weekly thin but I don't know what the videos will be because I would like to change the topic. If you have any ideas then please let me know. Thanks for watching and see you next time.
Why do people give to others.
When I say that the first thing that might pop into your head is that how can you be so selfish not to help others in need. That is not what I am saying, I am simply asking why. In “Walden”,Thoreau is asking the same question. Thoreau does not wan’t people to help him, he wants to do things on his own. “If I knew for a certainty that a man was coming to my house with the conscious design of doing me good, I should run for my life…” Thoreau must think that since he does not wan’t or need help, he should not help others because they might not wan’t help. You might think that that is selfish but if you think about why people are philanthropic it is not. Although philanthropy is to help others people truly do it to feel good about themselves. If you ask almost anybody that is helping another person they will say that they get a good felling doing it. So really they are helping themselves feel good as well. Now I am not saying that you should not help people, in fact I think just about the opposite of that. It is vary important to help people in need and some times it is not about the feeling that you get but rather just doing the right thing. The point that I am trying to make is that don’t call people selfish when they don't help others in need by donating or volunteering because most likely you are doing it some for your self as well.
"Do what you love and love what you do."
In your life you will need to make work to some degree to get money. If you don't work to get money you work to get the product that money buys (farmers). Teacher, scientist, writer, no matter what you are you are working for one cause. In this section of "Walden" this is exactly the dilemma that Thoreau goes though, once he finished his house in the woods he needed a way to pay for the rest of the necessities like food and clothes. Some things he provided for himself but he could not get everything from the woods. Thoreau must choose what he will do for money but his fear is that like most people that he will work his entire life and never get to enjoy it and die a rich but sad man. Although this was a long time ago that he was describing it vary much still applies to today. A saddening amount of people do exactly what Thoreau fears, they spend the best part of their life working and never stop to enjoy the wonderers life that is all around them. Fortunately there is a solution to this. My is a good example, he spends most of his hours in the day working and it does not end at five, he works for most of the time that he is awake all day every day. He may be working hard but he is doing what he loves to do which is physics, so to him it is not really work. Thoreau agrees with this by saying “In short, I am convinced, both by faith and experience, that to maintain one's self on this earth is not a hardship but a pastime” This is my goal in life and it is what Thoreau is trying to achieve. I want to find a job that I love to do so I never feel that I live a life of nothing, I don't want to find my self when I am a old man sitting in a wheel chair thinking to my self that I have done nothing in my life. You only have one life so don't waste it.
Sometimes in life you need to get away from something to truly look in. In March of 1845 Thoreau decided that we was going to build a shack out in the woods by Walden pond. He borrowed a friends axe and went out to the woods to chop down some trees, he later bought an old shack to use it for parts to build his own. "There is some of the same fitness in a man's building his own house that there is in a bird's building its own nest." He is saying if other things in nature, like birds, build their own house than why don't we. Instead we "lay their eggs in nests which other birds have built". I agree with Thoreau that there is some pride in building your own dwelling. Thoreau takes pride in him knowing how much his house cost to the penny, very few people know this but even fewer know the cost of all the individual parts. When you build you own house you know exactly how you house is made, this does not only apply to houses, I am a believe that no matter what you do you should experience it yourself and learn hands on. I don't like to learn from people telling me something, I like to learn by exploring the subject my self. I might come to the same conclusion but I will know how and why that is. This past summer I was lucky enough to build a cabin myself. I learned more about construction in that one month than I did in the rest of my life. I learned all that went into it and I got to see in rise from the floorboards to the rafters every step of the way. I will never forget the feeling of standing on the roof 20 feet off the ground after a long days of work finally finished with all of the early mornings and long days of the best summer of my life.
In reading this next chapter of "Walden" about Clothes and Shelter, my mind was opened and made me think about what we really need if life. When Thoreau talks about clothes he does not mean that clothes are a bad thing. He simply is saying that fancy clothes should be a bad thing. He thinks that the only reason to wear different clothes is to show off, that the men that wear the suits do so to say that they can afford them. This is how it was back then and it has changed a bit to this day. For example, back when he was writing this only the people with money could afford the jackets and the ties. Now most people can afford that but some people still have expensive shoes or socks or watches that they wear. I do not think that people only wear it to show off but some do. Some of you might be thinking, thinking that what if someone must wear a coat and tie for school or for work. Thoreau counters this by writing "I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes...', He is saying that you should be careful of places (enterprises) that make you wear fancy clothes because he thinks that new clothes are bad so the organisation is bad. Like most things I do not fully agree with this but I see where he is coming from and I understand what he is saying.
In the next chapter about shelter Thoreau is saying almost the same about clothes and how he acknowledges that although shelter is necessary, you do not need a mansion to live in. As long as you have the basics you are ok. I think that shelter is one of the easiest ways to show you money. If you think about it, houses are on a road that anybody can drive down and see. They also have a big difference compared to their price. Your can tell how much a house is worth easily by looking at the size, big is more and small is less, it is that simple. So if you have a big house everybody knows that you have money. I agree with thoreau on this one by saying that you don't need more than the standards of living but the standards have changed. What used to be a mansion is now a hut so as long as you have this new standard that we are used to you do not need more. Every page of "Walden has been a thought provoking experience and I hope that it will continue.
This was my first go at making a video and I hope that It is not to bad. If you found this tip to be helpful let me know. If you anything that you would change about this video (which you will) then please let me know in the comments. I do read them and I will change it for next time. If you want help doing this on your own then let me know and I can help with that too.
Champions keep playing until they get it right.~Billie Jean King
Have any of you heard someone say "Would you rather be the best player on the worst team or the worst player on the best team", Most of the time it is just something to think about, but this fall I had to actually make that decision. After the tryouts for varsity soccer were over. Mr. Star. told me that we wanted to talk to me sometimes, and if you have ever been in a tryout you know that when the coach wants to talk to you it is most likely not good. When I got into his office he told me that I had a choice, I could play on varsity soccer and maybe not play as much or I could play on J.V. and be the star player. I almost Immediately decided that I wanted to play on varsity. Some of you might be thinking that I should have played on J.V. so I could play more to get better, but I would say the opposite has happened. In the beginning of the season I did not play much and you could tell that I was one of the worse players, but in practice I worked hard and with the help of all of the coaches and all of the better players I got to play with, I got better. Every day I got better. This showed in the games when I would play more and I would be able to keep up with the better players on the team and make an impact on the game. Did I make mistakes, yes, but the coaches and the players helped me fix them. Now almost a month in I play almost as much as other players around me and I don't feel like that other kid that is not really a part of the team but feel like I contribute to every win in some way. I have enjoyed improving for one month and I look forward to the next with the team.
You make a choice in your life, and it affects your life in all the ways, good
and bad.~ John Mayer
Some things in life might seem like a good Idea, but until you go through with it you will not understand the true difficulty of it. At the end of the summer my family decided to dive in the world of puppyhood and get an eight week old english golden retriever. As most of you know, puppy’s can be some of the cutest animals that you have ever seen. They are soft, then cuddle, and they play. Nobody can resist her face when we are walking around and they have to stop and play. A couple of weeks ago, when the new puppy was starting to get used to her new life and to world in general. We started to let her explore more of the house and not be watched 24/7. This all was happening during the day so I was at school and it was just Zoey (my dog) and my mom. After I left for school during the day my mom went upstairs to do laundry, but the dog was still down stairs. When I came back I walked into the living room and I saw Zoey. She was sitting on the rug in the middle of the room with my new pair of sneakers in her mouth and being ripped in half. These shoes I had just gotten that day and I had not even gotten to ware them yet. Out of an entire closest full of shoes to pick from, there she was chewing on my brand new shoes. At first I was angry at her but when I saw her cute, harmless face looking at me wondering if she did something wrong I thought about it and I calmed down. She did not know yet that chewing shoes was not something that she should do and that part of being a puppy was to learn what she should do and what she should not do. That is not the only thing she does, she chews peoples hands, she steals food, and she pees on the rug. You could say that getting a puppy is not a good idea for the reasons listed but she will grow out of most of these things and the goods out way all of the bad parts about getting a dog. Not all things in life will be all good but don’t be discouraged because if you really look at the good and the bad parts you might find that the bad parts will go away or that the good is more than the bad. Getting a dog is one of the best decisions that we made in a long time and I do not retreat the decision.
Walking with a friend in the dark is better than walking alone in the light~ Hellen Keller
There will be some point in your life when you will wish that nothing can get between you and your friends but life is never exactly how you wish. Some of the friends that I meet at Camp Becket I wish will come my best friends, and for that month they are; but it all changes when we leave camp and go are separate ways. From day on to when you are hugging them to say goodbye, you are close to the other people in the cabin like you have know them for years. In some years you might become friends with all of them but last sumer it was different, we became brothers. Last summer I went to Camp Becket in western Massachusetts for the fourth time, and like the years before you get placed in a cabin full of nine random people that you might have seen walking around camp before but other than that they are complete strangers. From then on you live with them and are with them 24/7 for four weeks. The moment when I knew that we would get close as a family that Sumer is when we had an overnight across the lake. If you don't know what and overnight is you basically just walk around the lake and for a night you sleep in a lean-to and cook your food on a wood burning fire. Late in the night after we have had are s'mores we all ask each other questions that we would normally not ask each other. Theses questions ranged from telling the story of you first kiss to what was your most embarrassing moment. Now some of the answers people gave were not told to anybody before and they were there deepest secrets. Some people were reluctant to share but in the end everybody did. One of my favorite stores was from my counselor and it was about how he was demonstrating himself braking a wood board for a talent show. He did karate so he knew what he was doing but he tried and tried and he could not brake the board. This was in front of a live audience so it was vary embarrassing moment in his life. He later found out that it was a different type of board that was made with plywood in the middle making it very difficult to break and it was meant for black belts. These stories can be very funny but also can be embarrassing for the person telling the story. These are the types of stores that you don't tell just anybody .The most amazing part of that night was that we had only known each other for a week at the max. After only one week were were closets of friends. If we became best friends in a week, imagine what the next three were like. The next three weeks of my life I have never felt closer to any group of people and we had know each other for only a month. When it was getting near the end of the summer we were not sure what to do because we all knew that we would go back and be with our old friends but we were not sure to what extent we would see this newly made family. We all have intentions of staying close together but I have not talked to anyone in my cabin yet and for that I feel ashamed, ashamed that I am losing some of my best friends. This summer was one of the best summers of my life for one reason only, that over my month at camp I have become much more that friends with these people, but they have become my brothers.
